Australian Government releases evaluation statement for methyl salicylate

The Australian Industrial Chemical Introduction Scheme conducted a human health risk assessment on Methyl salicylate, also known as Benzoic acid, 2-hydroxy-, methyl ester (CAS registry number 119-36-8), due to indications of potential human health risks. The evaluation focused on its industrial uses in Australia. Methyl salicylate is primarily used as a fragrance ingredient in various cosmetic products with concentrations up to 2%. According to the assessment report, the chemical is identified as having low acute dermal and inhalation toxicity, moderate acute oral toxicity, and can cause serious eye damage. It is a weak skin sensitiser and has potential reproductive toxicity, particularly affecting fetal development based on animal data. No significant genotoxic or carcinogenic potential is observed. The primary systemic chronic effect of concern for risk characterisation is developmental toxicity.
