The European Commission has directed ECHA to broaden the REACH restriction proposal for chromium (VI) substances, encompassing at least 12 variants. This mandate, an extension of a previous request from September 2023 focusing on two entries, now includes additional substances from the REACH Authorisation List and others not listed, like barium chromate. These substances pose risks to workers and the public if used as substitutes for authorized chromium (VI) substances. ECHA will submit the proposal by April 11, 2025, launching a second call for evidence in June to gather information on alternatives and usage. The outcomes of the first call will be discussed in a webinar that would be conducted on 6th June, 2024. The proposal's preparation and evaluation will adhere to standard REACH processes, drawing on ECHA's experience in handling authorization applications for these substances.
