The Irish Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, has begun implementing additional sections of the Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Act 2023 to protect children from tobacco products and nicotine inhaling products. The measures include banning the sale of tobacco products at events aimed at children, prohibiting advertising for nicotine inhaling products around cinema films, public service vehicles, stops or stations, and within 200 metres of schools. The measures will take effect from 23 September 2024. Additionally, test purchasing operations carried out by the National Environmental Health Service of the Health Service Executive will be underpinned by law. This comes on the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the smoking ban in workplaces in Ireland. The Minister of State, Hildegarde Naughton, welcomed the measures and emphasized the importance of protecting children from addictive products.
