ANSES proposes a revision of the European harmonised classification of diphenyl guanidine (DPG), a substance commonly used in rubber manufacturing, under the CLP (classification, labeling, and packaging) regulation. This is done to increase protection against neurological disorders and reproductive harm, and other health risks associated with DPG exposure through toys, tyres, footwear etc. ANSES's assessment indicates a need for a stronger classification based on updated evidence. The proposed classifications include the following:
-Acute toxicity (ingestion); Category 3 (H301: Toxic if swallowed)
-Skin irritation; Category 2 (H315: Causes skin irritation)
-Serious eye damage; Category 1 (H318: Causes serious eye damage)
-Skin sensitisation; Category 1A (H317)
-Reproductive toxicity; Category 1B (H360FD)
-Specific target organ toxicity (repeated exposure); Category 2 (H373)
-Hazardous to the aquatic environment; chronic toxicity Category 3 (H412)
The proposal is open for public consultation on the ECHA website, allowing companies to provide additional scientific arguments and information. After the consultation period, ANSES will address the comments received, and ECHA’s Committee for Risk Assessment will issue its opinion.
