On 17 June 2026 Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) Waste Exports Update in partnership with state and territory governments and the Australian Local Government Association, regulates the export of certain waste materials under the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020. This followed a March 2020 agreement by the former Council of Australian Governments (COAG) to control exports of glass, tyres, paper, and plastic (including processed engineered fuel). The regulation ensures that only properly processed and treated waste is exported, preventing the dumping of unprocessed materials overseas. This initiative aims to protect the environment and human health from the adverse impacts of improper waste disposal in destination countries. Each waste type is subject to specific export rules and requirements. Exporters must fully comply with these conditions before shipping any regulated waste. A review of the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020 is currently underway to assess its effectiveness and potential improvements.
