On May 18, 2026, European Chemicals Agency opened a public consultation on the harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) proposal for Hydrolysed chitosan, hydrochloride (DP = 25-55; average acetylation degree 0-20%), marketed as OptiCHOS, under the European Union Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation. The dossier was submitted by the Netherlands and currently proposes no harmonised classification; however, multiple hazard classes have been opened for commenting, including acute toxicity, skin and eye irritation, skin sensitisation, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, specific target organ toxicity, aspiration hazard, and hazards to the aquatic environment, among others. The consultation period began on May 18, 2026 and will remain open until July 17, 2026. ECHA invited stakeholders to submit scientific comments and additional relevant data regarding the hazard classes under review. A parallel consultation on the substance’s assessment report as a plant protection product active substance is also being conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
