On May 4, 2026, the European Commission, through its Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety, announced the publication of a preliminary opinion by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) on the safety of acetophenone. The preliminary opinion is open for public consultation, with stakeholders invited to submit comments until July 6, 2026. This consultation process allows interested parties to provide scientific data, comments, or feedback that may be considered before the SCCS finalizes its assessment. The evaluation focuses on the safety of acetophenone as used in consumer products, contributing to the EU’s broader framework for ensuring the safety of cosmetic ingredients and protecting public health.
