The United States Department of Agriculture, through its Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), has proposed revisions to the U.S. Standards for Grades of Frozen Asparagus under draft notification G/TBT/N/USA/2269, aimed at modernizing grading criteria and simplifying quality assessment requirements for the product. Stakeholders may submit comments on the proposal until 9 June 2026.

1.A central amendment in the proposal is the establishment of a uniform head content requirement for frozen asparagus cuts and tips. Under the revised standard, products would be required to contain an average of at least 15% asparagus heads, while each individual sample must contain not less than 8% head material. This replaces existing differentiated requirements and introduces a more streamlined and consistent grading approach.
2.The proposal also simplifies grading provisions for cuts and tips measuring 0.5 inch to 2 inches, reducing complexity in product classification. In addition, USDA proposes updating the definition of head to improve inspection consistency and reflect current commercial practices.
According to USDA, the revisions are intended to improve clarity, support uniform application of grading criteria, and align standards with present-day industry expectations while maintaining product quality benchmarks for frozen asparagus traded in the U.S. market.
If adopted, the revised standard would update long-standing grading provisions used by producers, processors, and traders involved in frozen vegetable commerce.
