On 23 June 2026 Vietnam Standards and Quality Institute (TCVN) published a report highlighting concerns over the detection of formamide, a chemical associated with reproductive and endocrine toxicity, in several well-known baby diaper products sold in China. The report cites a recent investigation prompted by consumer complaints of skin irritation, redness, and sores in infants after prolonged diaper use, with symptoms reportedly subsiding after switching brands. Laboratory testing using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified formamide and other potentially harmful substances in samples from several diaper brands, including Huggies, Beaba Baby, and Babycare. While the manufacturers stated that their products comply with existing Chinese regulations, they did not provide specific test reports demonstrating compliance. The report notes that formamide is classified by the European Union as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant and is prohibited for use in cosmetics in China. Biological screening conducted by the Shandong Provincial Public Health Clinical Center detected formamide in blood and urine samples from children who frequently used diapers. The report recommends revising China's GB/T 28004.1-2021 diaper standard to introduce mandatory testing requirements and safety limits for formamide and other hazardous substances to strengthen consumer protection.
