Shining Sea Fish Co., based in Detroit, Michigan, has recalled its “Ma Cohen’s Kippered Herring” smoked fish products due to a potential risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause life-threatening food poisoning.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recalled products consist of uneviscerated fish longer than five inches, which may support the growth of the bacteria. Consumers have been advised not to consume the product even if it does not appear spoiled.
The recalled products were distributed to retail grocery stores in Michigan, Minnesota, and North Dakota. The products are sold in clear plastic packaging with a foil label displaying the product information and lot numbers.
Affected lots include:
LOT 25079 – Expiration May 03, 2026
LOT 25055 – Expiration May 12, 2026
LOT 25028 – Expiration June 03, 2026
LOT 26344 – Expiration July 22, 2026
No illnesses have been reported to date. The issue was identified following routine testing by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, which found that the fish had not been fully eviscerated.
Botulism symptoms may include weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, breathing problems, abdominal swelling, and constipation. Consumers experiencing such symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
The company stated that the product has been permanently discontinued. Consumers are advised to return the recalled products to the place of purchase for a full refund.
