From July 1, 2025, Australia will enforce new tobacco laws that change how tobacco products look, taste, and are sold. Flavoured additives like menthol, clove, and rum, as well as crush balls, will be banned to prevent masking the harshness of tobacco and reduce its addictiveness—particularly for youth.

Packaging will also be standardised: 20 sticks per cigarette pack, 30g per roll-your-own pouch, and 10 packs per carton. Descriptive terms like “smooth” or “gold” will be removed to avoid giving a false impression of reduced harm. All cigarettes will have uniform size and filters, eliminating designs that may mislead consumers.

Updated health warnings and quit-support materials will be included with each pack, while menthol cigarettes and accessories will be fully banned. These changes aim to reduce smoking rates, prevent new uptake especially among young people and support Australians who want to quit.
