"On April 09, 2025, the European Commission issued a call for data regarding the use of glyoxylic acid in the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in cosmetic products. The aim is to collect robust scientific evidence to support a safety assessment of glyoxylic acid, specifically in hair straightening formulations. This review has been prompted by concerns over potential renal toxicity, initially raised by the French agency ANSES (Agence Nationale de Sécurité Sanitaire). This initiative is intended to supply the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) with the essential data required for a comprehensive safety evaluation. The outcomes will guide potential regulatory measures, supporting the Commission’s commitment to protecting public health while upholding the integrity of the cosmetics market. The consultation period is open from April 09, 2025 to April 08, 2026."
