The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) held a meeting of its Working Group on Cosmetic Ingredients in Luxembourg on February 19-20, 2025. The meeting, conducted via audio, covered discussions on draft opinions for several substances, including Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA), Benzophenone-2 and 5, Prostaglandin and analogues, Thiomersal, and Cannabidiol (CBD). Preliminary opinions on Salicylic Acid, Butylparaben, and Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (DHHB) were published for public comments.

Final discussions included Methyl Salicylate and Benzophenone-1, while the evaluation of EHMC/OMC remains on hold pending study results. The group reviewed mandates related to Basic Brown 16, Basic Blue 99, and Titanium Dioxide (nano and non-nano). Additional updates covered the safety dossier on salicylates, a warning on glyoxylic acid in hair straightening products, and participation in the European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) event. The next Working Group and plenary meetings are scheduled from March to June 2025.
