The SCCS adopted its final Opinion on Butylparaben on 30 April 2025, after considering comments from an eight-week public consultation. Key revisions were made in toxicological and safety evaluation sections. The SCCS concluded that using Butylparaben at 0.14% in all cosmetic products is **not safe** for children aged 0.5 to 10 years when used in combination. However, it is safe in **individual** product categories, excluding body lotion. To ensure safety across all age groups and product combinations, the SCCS recommends reducing Butylparaben concentrations so that the total exposure does not exceed 245 µg/kg bw/day. Proposed safe levels are 0.14% in rinse-off products, 0.002% in leave-on products, and 0.092% in oral care products. These levels are considered safe for children when products are used individually or together. The Opinion excludes sprayable products and does not assess environmental risks.
