The Government of Canada assessed the Benzotriazoles and Benzothiazoles Group under CEPA 1999. The evaluation found that nine benzotriazole substances do not meet CEPA section 64 criteria and require no further regulatory action. However, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and its precursors pose environmental risks and are recommended for addition to Part 2 of Schedule 1 of CEPA. MBT has potential aquatic toxicity but low bioaccumulation. Human health risks for both subgroups were deemed low. A public comment period on the proposed risk management approach runs from March 8 to May 7, 2025. These substances are used in rubber, lubricants, mining, and cosmetics. The government aims to regulate MBT and its precursors while continuing discussions with stakeholders.
