On June 10, 2025, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) circulated a draft Malawi Standard "DMS 2236:2025, Detergent-disinfectants based on stabilized inorganic chlorine compounds – Specification". This standard sets specifications for two types of detergent-disinfectants formulated with stabilized inorganic chlorine compounds and other compatible chemical agents like surface-active agents and phosphates. Intended for use on inanimate surfaces, the standard applies to both liquid (Type 1) and solid (Type 2) products, with optional foaming or non-foaming variants. The products must demonstrate bactericidal efficacy by killing at least 99.9% of specified microorganisms within 30 seconds, maintain a pH below 10.5, and contain limited water-insoluble matter (≤5 g/ℓ for Type 1 and ≤2.5% by mass for Type 2). Additionally, the formulation must be free-rinsing, leaving no significant residues. Definitions for key terms like disinfectant, batch, and standard conditions are provided, and the standard is intended to guide product evaluation and conformity to hygiene expectations in general disinfection applications. Comments are due by August 09, 2025.
