On June 10, 2025, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) circulated a draft Malawi Standard "DMS 2235:2025, Detergent-disinfectants based on organic halogen compounds (other than iodine compounds) – Specification". This Draft Malawi Standard DMS 2235:2025 outlines specifications for two types of detergent-disinfectants based on organic halogen compounds (excluding iodine), such as fluorine, bromine, or chlorine bonded directly to nitrogen. These formulations, which may include surface-active agents and phosphates, must be water-miscible and are intended for use on pre-cleaned, soil-free inanimate surfaces. Applicable for general disinfection, examples include chloramine T, halazone, and dichloroisocyanuric acid. The standard recognizes two types: Type 1 (homogeneous liquid) and Type 2 (solid form as beads, granules, or powder). Definitions are provided for key terms like “acceptable,” “batch,” “detergent-disinfectant,” and “standard conditions” (23 °C ±2 °C; 50% ±5% relative humidity). This standard ensures that products used in sanitation practices meet performance and safety expectations, facilitating consistent efficacy and quality in surface disinfection. Comments are due by August 09, 2025.
