On June 10, 2025, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) circulated a draft Malawi Standard "DMS 2238:2025, Detergent-disinfectants based on quaternary ammonium compounds – Specification". This Draft Malawi Standard DMS 2238:2025 sets the requirements for two types of detergent-disinfectants formulated with quaternary ammonium compounds and other compatible chemical agents such as surface-active agents and phosphates. These water-miscible products are designed for use on inanimate surfaces that have been pre-cleaned and are free of visible soil. Intended for general use, the standard applies to Type 1 (homogeneous liquid) and Type 2 (solid: beads, granules, or powder). Quaternary ammonium compounds are defined as nitrogen-based compounds with a valence of five, commonly used for their antimicrobial activity. Examples include cetrimide, benzalkonium chloride, and benzethonium chloride. The standard also defines key terms such as “acceptable,” “batch,” “aseptic,” and “standard conditions” to ensure clarity in interpretation and application. This standard aims to ensure efficacy, safety, and consistency in disinfection practices across various settings. Comments are due by August 09, 2025.
