"Germany has formally submitted a proposal to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to update the harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) of Trifluoroacetic Acid (TFA) under the EU CLP Regulation. The proposal, now open for public consultation until 25 July 2025, recommends classifying TFA as a reproductive toxicant (Category 1B) and recognizing it as both PMT (Persistent, Mobile, Toxic) and vPvM (very Persistent, very Mobile), citing long-term environmental risks. Additional changes include upgrading TFA's inhalation toxicity to Category 3 and introducing supplemental hazard statements (EUH450, EUH451, EUH071) to reflect respiratory and environmental hazards. These proposed changes align with the EU’s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability. TFA is widely used in the production of fluorinated pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and fine chemicals. The reclassification could significantly impact supply chains, requiring updates to safety data sheets, labels, transport documentation, and regulatory compliance under REACH. The proposal could affect various sectors—especially pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and agriculture—by tightening oversight and advancing sustainability goals. Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the consultation by submitting scientific data or operational feedback before the July deadline."
