Starting 1 July 2025, Switzerland will enforce a nationwide ban on Bisphenol A (BPA) and other hazardous bisphenols in food contact materials (FCMs) under a revised Swiss FCM Ordinance. The regulation applies to all manufacturers, importers, and distributors of coated materials and impacts packaging, food production, and consumer goods supply chains.

The ban prohibits the use and marketing of food contact materials made with BPA (CAS: 80-05-7) and its salts in varnishes and coatings. An exemption is allowed for large epoxy resin containers (>1,000 L), provided BPA migration into food is undetectable (≤1 μg/kg).

Key Features of the Regulation:
* Extends restrictions to all hazardous bisphenols classified as CMRs or endocrine disruptors under Swiss law.
* Requires validated testing methods to detect bisphenol residues down to 1 μg/kg.
* Mandates clear labelling and Declarations of Conformity listing all bisphenols used.

Transition Periods:
- 20 July 2026: Deadline to market non-compliant single-use items.
- 20 January 2029: Deadline for reusable or professional-use articles.

This move marks one of the most comprehensive national restrictions on bisphenols in food contact materials and reinforces Switzerland’s commitment to public health and chemical safety.
