UK Updates Concentration Limits of waste containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

"On April 01, 2025, the UK Environment Agency updated guidance on ""Identity and classify waste containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs)"". If the POPs in the waste are at or above the concentration limits then the waste is known as POPs waste. This guidance updates the concentration limit table by updating the concentration value for 'Total of tetra-, penta-, hexa-, hepta- and deca- bromodiphenyl ether to 500mg per kg'. Added rows with concentration value for 'Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and PFOA-related compounds', 'Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts, and PFHxS-related compounds' and 'Pentachlorophenol and its salts and esters' are listed below. 1) Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and PFOA-related compounds In firefighting foam mixtures, the sum of the concentrations of: - PFOA and its salts: 0.025mg per kg - PFOA-related compounds: 1mg per kg In other wastes, the sum of the concentrations of: - PFOA and its salts: 1mg per kg - PFOA-related compounds: 40mg per kg 2) Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts, and PFHxS-related compounds Sum of the concentrations of PFHxS and its salts: 1mg per kg Sum of the concentrations of PFHxS-related compounds: 40mg per kg 3) Pentachlorophenol and its salts and esters Sum of concentrations: 100mg per kg"
