On June 10, 2025, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) circulated a draft Malawi Standard "DMS 2234:2025, Detergent-disinfectant liquid toilet cleansers – Specification". This Draft Malawi Standard DMS 2234:2025 outlines requirements and test methods for detergent-disinfectant liquid toilet cleansers formulated with quaternary ammonium compounds and other compatible chemical agents like surface-active agents and phosphates. These water-miscible products are intended for cleaning and disinfecting toilet bowls and urinals. The standard defines “detergent-disinfectant” as a product that cleans and disinfects simultaneously, and “disinfectant” as a chemical that eliminates most pathogenic microorganisms on inanimate surfaces. The cleanser must be a homogeneous liquid, free from sediments and suspended matter, possess a stable and distinct color, and be miscible with water in all proportions. It should remain stable for at least one year in its original sealed container at ambient temperature and must not damage toilet surfaces when used as directed. The standard ensures the effectiveness, safety, and quality of toilet cleaning products for public and private sanitation needs. Comments are due by August 09, 2025.
