On June 10, 2025, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) circulated a draft Malawi Standard "DMS 2237:2025, Disinfectants based on phenolics – Specification". This Draft Malawi Standard DMS 2237:2025 specifies the requirements for disinfectants containing phenolic compounds, intended for use on inanimate surfaces that are free from excess dirt. Phenolics, such as phenol and o-phenylphenol, are defined as compounds with at least one hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring. These disinfectants must be miscible with water and are categorized as either Type 1 (homogeneous liquid) or Type 2 (solid: beads, granules, or powder). Key terms such as “batch,” “clean conditions,” “dirty conditions,” and “disinfectant” are defined for clarity. The standard distinguishes between clean and dirty conditions, noting that more concentrated formulations may be required when organic material is present. This standard ensures the efficacy and quality of phenolic disinfectants used in general hygiene applications across non-living surfaces. Comments are due by August 09, 2025.
