On March 27, 2025, China's National Health Commission (NHC) and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) jointly released the National Food Safety Standard for Canned Foods (GB 7098-2025). This updated standard applies to all canned food products produced and sold in China, outlining requirements for ingredients, sensory and physical-chemical indicators, as well as limits on contaminants and microbial content. Notably, the standard excludes canned complementary foods for infants and young children, which are governed by a separate regulation. The finalized standard will come into effect on March 16, 2026. China had previously notified the draft version of this standard to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on October 25, 2023.
