The European Commission has amended Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives, authorising the use of sodium ascorbate (E 301) as a carry-over additive in vitamin A preparations intended for use in infant formula and follow-on formula. The amendment permits sodium ascorbate (E 301) — typically used as an antioxidant — to be included in vitamin A ingredient preparations that are subsequently added to infant formula products. This authorisation follows a safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which confirmed its use poses no safety concern for infants at the proposed levels. The amendment ensures alignment with current technological needs in the production of infant nutrition products while maintaining high consumer health protection standards. The change is implemented by updating Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, which governs food additive use in other food ingredients.
