The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated the safety of an oil derived from the microalga *Schizochytrium limacinum* (strain ATCC-20889) for use in infant and follow-on formula as a novel food. This oil is rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), comprising approximately 40%–43% of its fatty acids. The assessment confirmed the absence of viable cells in the oil and found no toxicological concerns, deeming it safe under the proposed conditions of use. The evaluation also considered the production process, compositional data, and the absence of marine biotoxins. Consequently, EFSA concluded that the oil is safe for inclusion in infant and follow-on formulas at the specified DHA levels. citeturn0search0
