The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published a scientific opinion on the safety of cetylated fatty acids (CFAs) derived from vegetable oils as a novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. This novel ingredient is composed primarily of cetylated myristic acid and cetylated oleic acid, produced via esterification of vegetable oil-derived fatty acids with cetyl alcohol. The applicant proposed its use in food supplements for adults, with a maximum daily intake of 1.6 grams of combined CFAs. EFSA’s NDA Panel evaluated the ingredient’s identity, production process, specifications, stability, anticipated intake, toxicological data, and allergenic potential. The Panel concluded that cetylated fatty acids are safe under the proposed conditions of use and intake levels. This decision supports the regulated introduction of CFAs into the EU food supplements market for adult consumers.
