The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a positive scientific opinion on the safety of paramylon, a ?-1,3-D-glucan derived from Euglena gracilis, as a novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. Produced through controlled fermentation, this purified, insoluble fibre-rich ingredient was proposed for use in a variety of food products including baked goods, dairy items, soups, meat analogues, cereal bars, food supplements, and foods for special medical purposes. EFSA’s NDA Panel evaluated compositional, toxicological, genotoxicity, allergenicity, ADME, and nutritional data as well as findings from human studies. The Panel concluded that paramylon is safe for the proposed conditions of use and intake levels. No concerns were identified regarding its manufacturing process, composition, or biological safety. This decision paves the way for the introduction of this microalgae-derived fibre ingredient into a broad range of EU food categories.
