The European Commission has concluded its consultation on the novel food status of the young harvested shoots of Triticum aestivum L., commonly known as wheatgrass. The assessment, carried out by the Irish competent authority, evaluated whether these shoots required authorization under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. Based on evidence of traditional consumption in the EU prior to 15 May 1997, it was determined that the young shoots are not considered a novel food. This decision applies to the plant material itself, not to processed forms like juice or extracts, unless separately assessed. Any significant changes in production, composition, or intended use could require a fresh evaluation under the novel food regulation. The outcome clarifies the regulatory status of young wheatgrass shoots for the EU food market.
