On January 29, 2025, the European Commission issued Regulation (EU) 2025/147, amending Annex I to Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 by removing the flavoring substance 4-Methyl-2-phenylpent-2-enal (FL No 05.100) from the Union list. This decision follows a 2022 evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which raised concerns about the substance's potential aneugenicity—a capacity to cause chromosomal abnormalities. Subsequent restrictions were imposed in 2024, but due to the absence of additional safety data and the indication from food business operators that the substance is no longer in use, the Commission has now fully delisted it. Products containing this flavoring, placed on the market before the regulation's enforcement, may be sold until their designated expiration dates.
