On January 29, 2025, the European Commission issued Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/153, authorizing the marketing of Lemna minor and Lemna gibba plants as novel foods within the EU. Initially, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) had safety concerns due to high manganese levels in these plants. However, subsequent cultivation adjustments reduced the manganese content to safe levels, comparable to spinach. EFSA then concluded that these plants are safe for consumption, provided the manganese content does not exceed 6 mg/kg fresh weight. Consequently, the Commission amended Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 to include Lemna minor and Lemna gibba in the Union list of authorized novel foods.
