The competent authority of Lithuania has completed a consultation on the novel food status of a preserve made from immature female cones of Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots pine) and the syrup produced during their preparation. The aim was to verify whether these products require authorisation under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 as novel foods. Following a review of the available evidence and use history, Lithuania concluded that both the preserved pine cones and the syrup are not considered novel foods. This means they can be placed on the EU market without prior novel food authorisation. The decision acknowledges either a history of traditional consumption or conditions placing the products outside the scope of novel food regulation. This outcome permits their continued sale and marketing within the EU without further approval.
