Starting Jan. 1, 2025, Minnesota will enforce PFAS prohibitions under Amara's Law (Minn. Stat. § 116.943). Products with intentionally added PFAS will be banned in categories like cleaning products, cosmetics, dental floss, fabric treatments, juvenile products, menstruation products, textile furnishings, and ski wax. Certain packaging is also included. While PFAS are common in these items, alternatives exist. The MPCA may expand prohibitions if environmental harm is likely. No exemptions or deadline extensions apply. “Currently unavoidable use” determinations do not affect these bans. Manufacturers must stay informed, as MPCA won’t provide direct notifications. These restrictions follow the 2024 PFAS bans in firefighting foam and food packaging. Rulemaking will clarify avoidable uses.
