US FDA Proposes Front-of-Package Nutrition Labels to Promote Healthier Choices

On January 14, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a new front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling system called the "Nutrition Info box." This label aims to provide consumers with clear, at-a-glance information about key nutrients—saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars—categorized as "Low," "Med," or "High." The initiative seeks to help consumers make healthier dietary choices and address diet-related diseases. The FDA is accepting public comments on this proposal until May 16, 2025. If implemented, businesses with annual food sales of $10 million or more will have three years to comply, while those with less than $10 million will have four years.
